Soe Aung

I met Soe Aung 2 years ago when I was attending a workshop in Kuala Lumpur (吉隆坡)

Soe Aung is the delegate of the National Council of the Union of Burma, which is based in Thailand. So Aung was friendly, gentle and kind. When he learnt that I am from Hong Kong, he said that I should treasure the freedom there. I told him I am the supporter of Aung San Suu Kyi (昂山素姬). She is a respectable woman and I long to see her free.

Soe Aung told me stories about democracy movement in Burma during the 80’s. He talked about student movement and the subsequent crackdown by the military. He also talked about arrest and execution … And because of the crackdown, he fled to Thailand in 1990, leaving his parents and wife since. I almost burst into tears when I heard that he had not heard from his family for 15 years. Soe Aung is a strong man, he comforted me by saying that he did for the freedom of his fellow Burmese and it values.

About a week ago, democracy movement in Rangoon led by monks rocked the world. Later I saw Soe Aung being interviewed in the new report and that reminded me of an old friend.

I searched for my name card to find Soe Aung’s email address and sent my regards to him and his fellow Burmese immediately.

Soe Aung has been updating me on the situation in Burma and asked me to spread the news around.

I’ve been observing the saffron revolution (袈裟革命) hoping for a peaceful solution there and the coming democracy in Burma.Also hope Soe Aung can go home at last.

我是中國人？

剛認識我的人都會提出同一個問題：「黃先生，您是混血兒嗎？」

這是一條我從小就要回答的問題。我的答案很簡單：「我是中國人，廣東三水人仕，我父母都是百分百的中國人。」

但我的相貌，的確長得不像中國人，不單是我，還有我的祖父、姑母、父親、堂兄、堂妹，都長得像外國人一樣。

小時候，我以為「混血兒」是指那些有西方血統的人，但自己卻長得一點也不像西方人，那時我已懷疑自己的血統既非來自西方亦非百分百漢族。

母親曾對我說，我的曾祖母是婆羅乃（即現今的沙勞越 Sarawak）人。大學時代，也有朋友說我像馬拉人，所以有一段時間我以為自已的祖先是東南亞人。

結婚後，太太說我不像馬拉人，而是像印度或巴基斯坦人，更奇怪的是，每當我經過重慶大廈時，那裏的南亞裔人士都對我投以份外友善的眼光，好像他鄉遇故知一樣，他們的反應令我更猶疑自已究竟有否印巴裔人的血統，但是，我又覺得印度或巴基斯坦人的輪廓與我並不相近。

當上區議員後，一位區議員同僚說我像新疆維吾爾人，不同人仕對我血統的不同"判斷"使我對我的"身世"更感興趣。

「九一一事件」後，幾位朋友半開玩笑地勸我不要到美國旅行，因為我太像中東恐佈份子。老實說我自已也覺得和伊朗、伊拉克人真的有幾分相似，所以那年我沒有去美國，卻去了土耳其。結果發覺土耳其人的輪廓與我十分相似，就連土耳其當地人也是這樣認為，因此我開始相信自己的血緣與土耳其有關，因為從來只有中國人說我像什麼什麼種族的人，卻沒有當地人說我像他們。

突破性的發展來臨了，本年的清明節，父親從家鄉（三水）帶來了一份由僑居新加坡的黃氏同族後人編著的族譜返港，族譜上正寫著我們黃氏這一族是「突厥之後」。

突厥人（Turks）是中亞民族的主要成份，古時居於西域（新疆）一帶，唐初征西域，突厥人敗走西遷，現時分佈在土耳其、哈薩克、阿賽拜疆、烏茲別克、土庫曼、吉爾吉斯等地。

族譜上記載，祖先為逃避戰亂，於元末明初年間旅居中原，後來落籍並逐漸南遷，並於明末清初定居於廣東三水。雖然族譜將自小困擾著我"身世"的迷團解開，知到自己的遠祖並非漢人，但正所謂落葉歸根，我所認知的，我是廣東三水人士，是一個不折不扣的中國人。
